PKLA values the important role the Brazos River Authority plays in monitoring and protecting water quality across the Brazos watershed, including Possum Kingdom Lake. We appreciate the ongoing work they do every month to collect and evaluate water-quality data on the lake.

📰 Recently, in a news interview, the BRA stated that it is “not taking a position” on whether TCEQ should grant a Contested Case Hearing on the City of Abilene’s proposal to discharge 1.51 million gallons per day of RO-treatment brine into a shallow, low-circulation cove on the west side of PK Lake.

PKLA believes that true neutrality supports an open, transparent review of the facts.

A Contested Case Hearing does not oppose Abilene, and it does not put BRA on one side or another. It simply ensures that the science, location, volume, and long-term water-quality impacts are reviewed in a fair and open setting.

🌊 If water quality is truly a top priority — and if basin-wide modeling and monitoring are already underway — then a full, public review is the responsible next step before moving forward with a major new discharge into a part of the lake that has almost no natural circulation.

PKLA will continue working cooperatively with the BRA and all agencies involved, while also speaking up for lake users and surrounding communities who expect transparency, scientific accountability, and a fair process.
